The York University Lions women's rugby team fell to the Western Mustangs by a score of 38-22 on Saturday (Sept. 26) in London, Ont.
York broke the scoreless game only five minutes into regulation when
Cheyenne Legerton (Brampton, Ont.) scored a try that she planted near the sideline corner. Soon after the Legerton try, the Mustangs went on a scoring frenzy, starting at the 7:02 mark when Paige Farries evaded multiple Lions and took off for a 50-yard try dash. After the Farries scoring drive, it was all Andrea Bowra as she single-handedly scored nine points in just over 10 minutes, making the score 14-5.
The Lions then went on a scoring frenzy of their own, when rookie
Bethany Pilkington (Mono, Ont.) scored a try of her own that put the Lions back into the game.
Cat Belanger (Orleans, Ont.) added a conversion, followed by another try by
Tobi Owotomo (Mississauga, Ont.), who sprinted into the try zone with no Mustangs in sight.
The score after the first half was 17-14 in favour of the Lions.
The Lions strong first half didn't carry over to the second as the Mustangs dominated the ball. Western scored five minutes into the half on a try coming from Veronica Herrigan that gave the Mustangs a two-point lead. Seven minutes after the Herrigan score, Rebecca Matheson found the try zone along with Farries scoring her second of the match, making the score 31-17 for the Mustangs.
Bowra added three converts to go 6-for-6 on the afternoon.
The Lions mustered up a late rally when
Petra Woods (Brampton, Ont.) broke away from the pack and planted a try of her own, but it was too late to completely erase the deficit.
The loss was the Lions' first of the season and they are now 2-1 after three weeks. They are back on the pitch on Friday (Oct. 2) when they take on the Queen's Gaels at 7pm at York Rugby Field.
