The No. 5 nationally-ranked York University Lions women's soccer team won on the road against the Windsor Lancers by edging out a 1-0 victory on Saturday (Sept. 26) thanks to a goal by fifth-year midfielder
Sydney Hoareau just before halftime.
Â
Demanding a physical battle from the Lancers, the Lions were aggressive on both sides of the ball to ensure a seventh consecutive win to add to their perfect record this year at 7-0-0. They remain the only team in the OUA to win all of their matches to date.
In the first half, the Lions attempted to execute off of several long-range efforts, but it was not until the 41
st minute that Hoareau (Brampton, Ont.) was able to find the back of the net. The buildup was clinical as the Lions were able to string together a series of passes along the right wing of the field before it was crossed in by fourth-year striker
Nour Ghoneim (Aurora, Ont.) and calmly placed below the crossbar by Hoareau.
The game found the Lions incredibly busy in front of the net, as they finished the game with seven shots, including five on goal. Ghoneim, Hoareau and rookie
Kiyani Johnson (Markham, Ont.) grabbed two each and
Colleen Beesley (Richmond Hill, Ont.) had one.
The game also marks the team's fourth shutout of the season, guarded by many of the hard-working members of the back line and goalkeeper
Taylor Grant (Brampton, Ont.), who has been in net for all four cleansheets and made just one save in the win on Saturday.
Â
In the upcoming week the Lions will be looking to come away with crucial wins to ensure them the top spot of the OUA West standings as they take on the other two unbeaten squads in the division. First up on Sunday (Sept. 27) is the No. 3 Western Mustangs (7-0-2) in London, Ont., then on Thursday (Oct. 1) they will be in Waterloo, Ont., to face the No. 4 Laurier Golden Hawks (7-0-1).
