In four seasons as a centre with the Yeomen hockey team (1972 to 1976), Al Avery was an outstanding offensive weapon, scoring a total of 53 goals and adding 113 assists in regular season play. During 1973-74 and 1974-75, York became one of the country's most winning hockey programs, ranked in the top five on a weekly basis. Avery, along with linemates Doug Dunsmuir and Tim Ampleford, dominated the Ontario conference and was key to the Yeomen's success. An OUAA all-star in 1973-74, Avery still holds the York single-season record for points per game (2.93). He is also second in career assists (113) and fourth in career points (166). Avery graduated in 1976 with a BA in physical education.
