Portia Barriffe was a member of the York women's soccer team from 1988 to 1991. During that time, York was consistently ranked among the top ten in Canada and won OWIAA silver and bronze medals. Barriffe made an immediate impact, being named an OWIAA all-star and a first-team CIAU all-Canadian in her rookie season. She went on to earn three more OWIAA all-star and CIAU all-Canadian selections in her four-year career. A captain or co-captain in each of her four seasons, she was awarded the York Athletic Excellence Award in 1990. As a sweeper, Barriffe was a key factor in York's success, leading the team to three division titles.
