Two alumni from the York women's volleyball program picked up some international hardware this week as Brandie Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Parades were both honoured with post-season awards by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB).
Â
Wilkerson, who teams with fellow Canadian Heather Bansley on the FIVB tour, was recognized with the Best Blocker award for her outstanding 2017-18 season. Along with Bansley, who was named the tour's top defensive player, the pair formed a formidable duo this season and ended the season ranked fourth in the FIVB rankings.
Â
Humana-Parades earned the Best Setter award this season, marking the third time in her career she's won a post-season award. In 2014 she was named the FIVB tour's top rookie and in 2017 she was named the tour's most improved player. Humana-Parades and her partner Sarah Pavan ended the season ranked just behind Wilkerson and Bansley as the fifth-ranked team in the world.
Â
Both Humana-Paredes and Wilkerson had outstanding university careers at York and have transitioned successfully to the pro beach tour. Humana-Parades played four years from 2010-14 and was named York's female athlete of the year in 2012. She is also a three-time OUA all-star and a CIS second-team all-Canadian. Wilkerson also played from 2010-14 and is a four-time OUA all-star and two-time CIS all-Canadian.
