The York University Lions men's hockey team lost with a final period goal from the Waterloo Warriors Friday night (Oct. 17), ending the game 3-2 at Canlan Ice Sports.
Â
In the first period at 4:03,
Shayne Rover (Newmarket, Ont.) stole the puck and stormed the Warrior goalie, Mike Morrison, with a strike that landed behind the goal line, establishing a 1-0 advantage.
Â
Just over four minutes later,
Colton Vannucci (Calgary) invaded the Warrior defence from the right side to provide an assist to
Derek Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.), who received the puck on the left side. Shepard buried the puck behind Morrison, advancing York to a 2-0 lead.
Â
Warriors forward Matt Kennedy diffused the disadvantage with a bullet shot at 15:53 that ricocheted off the Lions goalie
Chris Perugini (King City, Ont.) and penetrated the net.
Â
In the second period, Colin Behenna tied the game with a goal just 90 seconds into the frame, threatening the win for the Lions. The Warriors dominated the second period with more possessions and several rapid shots on Perugini. Perugini did not let the Warriors take the lead as he surrendered his body to the rigid Warrior attack.
Â
The score remained at 2-2 heading into the final period, but the tie did not last long as a Waterloo bullet finally leaked through Perugini's defence as Justin Larson scored a goal at 1:47, winning the game.
Â
Perugini played a sensational game with 41 saves, while Morrison stopped 23 for the win.
Â
The loss drops the Lions' record to 2-3-0 on the year, while the Warriors improved to 3-1-0 with the victory.
Â
The next challenge for the Lions is a home game against the Brock Badgers on Saturday (Oct.18) at Canlan Ice Sports. Puck drop is set for 7pm.
