The No. 3 nationally-ranked Queen's Gaels scored four power play goal en route to a 5-0 victory over the York University Lions in front of 1,562 people at the Rogers K-Rock Centre on Friday afternoon (Oct. 17).
Â
The first period remained scoreless until 16:03, when Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) improved on her OUA leading goal total, burying her fifth of the season on the power play to put the Gaels ahead in the first period. Addi Halladay (North Augusta, Ont.) doubled the Queen's lead before the first intermission, potting a power play marker of her own on a cannon from the point for her first CIS goal.
Â
The Gaels continued to take advantage York's penalties, as Mary Coughlin (Amherstburg, Ont.) netted a third power play goal for Queen's in the second period.
Â
The Gaels also got third-period goals from Nadia Larocca (Mississauga, Ont.) and Clare McKellar (London, Ont.), who scored a fourth power play goal for Queen's, to round out the scoring.
Â
York goaltender
Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.) made 29 saves in the loss, while Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.) picked up her second win of the season and the first shutout her career for the Gaels with 23 saves.
Â
The large crowd was thanks to a Homecoming weekend kick-off event that brought hundreds of school children to the arena. In partnership with the Kingston Frontenacs, the Rogers K-Rock Centre, and Queen's Women's Hockey Alumni, the game celebrated UN Day of the Girl, profiling women's sport and the role education plays in the rights of girls.
Â
The Lions will finally play their first home game of the year on Sunday (Oct. 19) when they welcome the UOIT Ridgebacks to Canlan Ice Sports for a game beginning at 2pm.
