The York University Lions field hockey team finished in fourth place at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championships on Sunday (Oct. 26) with a 2-1 loss to the Queen's Gaels in the bronze medal match.
 
After a scoreless first half, Queen's got on the board first in the 49^th minute when Taylor Herrington (Toronto) found the back of the net to give the Gaels the lead.
 
It was short-lived, however, as Lions rookie forward Madeleine Krupl (Ajax, Ont.) scored in the 57^th minute to tie the game at one.
 
The game appeared headed to penalty strokes as time wound down, but the Gaels found the go-ahead goal in the 67^th minute when Lindsay Bjornson (Surrey, B.C.) gave Queen's a lead they would not relinquish to claim the bronze medal.
 
The fourth-place result was a strong one for the Lions, who missed the playoffs last year and came into the championships seeded fifth. They upset the Waterloo Warriors 2-0 in the quarter-finals to have a chance to play for a medal.
 
The Toronto Varsity Blues won the gold medal with a 3-0 win over the Guelph Gryphons in the championship final. Both squads will now represent the OUA at the CIS championships next week at the University of Toronto.
