The York University Lions field hockey team finished in fourth place at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championships on Sunday (Oct. 26) with a 2-1 loss to the Queen's Gaels in the bronze medal match.
After a scoreless first half, Queen's got on the board first in the 49
th minute when Taylor Herrington (Toronto) found the back of the net to give the Gaels the lead.
It was short-lived, however, as Lions rookie forward
Madeleine Krupl (Ajax, Ont.) scored in the 57
th minute to tie the game at one.
The game appeared headed to penalty strokes as time wound down, but the Gaels found the go-ahead goal in the 67
th minute when Lindsay Bjornson (Surrey, B.C.) gave Queen's a lead they would not relinquish to claim the bronze medal.
The fourth-place result was a strong one for the Lions, who missed the playoffs last year and came into the championships seeded fifth. They upset the Waterloo Warriors 2-0 in the quarter-finals to have a chance to play for a medal.
The Toronto Varsity Blues won the gold medal with a 3-0 win over the Guelph Gryphons in the championship final. Both squads will now represent the OUA at the CIS championships next week at the University of Toronto.
