The York University Lions men's volleyball team overcame the RMC Paladins in straight sets in a home game on Sunday (Nov. 30) at the Tait McKenzie Centre to wrap up their fall semester.
Â
The Lions won the first set 25-20, the second 25-19 and the third 25-10.
Â
In the first,
Grant Lynch (Waterloo, Ont.) and
Marko Dakic (Mississauga, Ont.) were on fire with blocks, kills and assists to aid the York attack. The Paladins took the lead with a score of 15-12, until the Lions powerful hits helped them take the first set by five points.
Â
In the second
Arthur Swarcz (Toronto) effectively blocked the net from the Paladins attack and provided numerous kills to raise the Lions' score. A series of service errors allowed the Paladins to stay close throughout the set, but
Josh Henderson (Scarborough, Ont.) played a phenomenal set with eight kills and helped his team win by six.
Â
In the third set
Nicolas Pirnat (Ottawa) crushed the competition with his tremendous serves that advanced York with seven straight points and, eventually, a 12-2 lead.
Â
The Lions continued to conquer in the third with kills by Henderson,
Tyler Covach (Kitchener, Ont.),
Tim Jensen (Hamilton, Ont.) and Pirnat to win convincingly, allowing the Paladins only 10 points in the set.
Â
Dakic finished with nine kills, one ace and one block, Swarcz had eight kills and two blocks and Henderson ended the afternoon with eight kills and two blocks.
Â
For the Paladins, Adam Lupton had eight kills and three blocks, Blake McClelland finished with five kills and one block and Liam Glenn recorded two kills and two blocks.
Â
The win improved the Lions' record to 6-4 on the year, which currently has them in sixth place in the OUA standings, while the Paladins are still looking for their first win of the year.
Â
The two teams will meet again in the first match for both squads after the long December break, on Saturday, Jan. 10 in Kingston, Ont., beginning at 1pm.
