The York University Lions tennis teams went a combined 3-1 against the McMaster Marauders and Montreal Carabins on the final weekend of the regular season at the Tennis Canada Courts.
The women's team ended the season undefeated for the second year in a row, finishing with a dominant 7-0 win over the Marauders and a narrow 4-3 victory over the Carabins, who finished behind the Lions as OUA silver medallists last year.
The men's team, meanwhile, had a strong weekend with a 6-1 win over McMaster and a tight 4-3 loss to Montreal to finish the year 2-4.
Rookie
Nikki Carnovale (Woodbridge, Ont.), playing out of the top spot,
Isabella Baston (Toronto) and
Julia Khalilova (Etobicoke, Ont.) won both of their singles matches on the weekend to lead the Lions. Carnovale also partnered with
Eugenie Lim Ah Tock (Curepipe, Mauritius) for a pair of doubles wins.
The men also had two players to sweep all their matches in
Filip Obucina (Etobicoke, Ont.) and
Tre Eli (Toronto), who both went 4-0 in singles and doubles. They earned the Lions' two singles points against the Carabins and also won their doubles matches, Obucina alongside
Pranav Yardi (Mississauga, Ont.) and Eli with
Kevin Borsos (Everett, Ont.).
Both teams will be off Thanksgiving weekend and will return to action on Friday, Oct. 16 when the Lions host the 2015 OUA championships throughout the weekend. The women will be looking to win their second straight banner, while the Lions will be eyeing a rise from their seventh-place showing in 2014.
