The York University Lions track and field team combined to win 27 medals at their season-opening Xmas Open meet at the Toronto Track & Field Centre on Saturday (Nov. 29).

The women's team won 14 medals, including six golds, while the men had 13 total medals and two golds.

Sheereen Harris (Toronto) accounted for three gold medals, claiming individual titles in the 60m and 200m and also running the second leg of the winning 4x200m relay team. Joining her on the relay squad were
Mikeisha Bobb (London, Ont.),
Shania Payne (Maple Ridge, B.C.) and
Nicolette Witherspoon (Pickering, Ont.).

Bobb was also a multi-medallist, finishing atop the podium in the 60m hurdles and claiming the bronze medal in the 800m.

Rounding out the gold medals was
Brittany Crew (East York, Ont.), who swept the throwing events with first-place finishes in the shot put and weight throw. Her top distance of 16.05m in the shot put also qualified her for the CIS championships at the end of the season.

On the men's side, the gold medals were won by
Dereck Djan (Toronto) in the 200m and
Suraj Sharma (Brampton, Ont.) in the 3000m. Djan set a new personal best in the 200m and also captured the silver medal in the 60m, finishing only behind TJ Lawrence, who represented Canada at the most recent indoor world championships. Sharma led a sweep of the podium for the Lions in the 3000m, finishing seven seconds ahead of
Muad Issa (Mississauga, Ont.) and eight ahead of
Harishan Karunenthiran (Brampton, Ont.), who were second and third, respectively.

The Lions will be off for the month of December and will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 2 at the Gryphon Season Opener in Guelph, Ont.
