Picking up another win to add to its perfect record of six consecutive wins, the York University Lions women's soccer team defeated the Brock Badgers 1-0 on Saturday (Sept. 19) off of a late goal by fourth-year striker
Francesca Pedulla.
Â
The first half saw the No. 8 nationally-ranked Lions control the majority of possession as the team tried to break down the lines of the Badgers' defence. The half remained goalless despite many chances in front of net, including a powerful header by striker
Nour Ghoneim (Aurora, Ont.) that rang the near post midway through the half.
Â
The Lions were able to create more chances as the second half began, and finally in the 79
th minute Pedulla (Richmond Hill, Ont.) opened the scoring off of a clinical pass given from fifth-year defender
Taylor Lyons (Brampton, Ont.). Pedulla displayed incredible technical ability to beat Brock goalkeeper Larissa Aiken off the dribble and calmly placed the ball in the back of the net.Â
Â
Overall, the Lions took the home team by storm, finishing the game with an impressive 15 shots on goal, compared to just two by the Badgers. York goalkeeper
Taylor Grant (Brampton, Ont.) earned the cleansheet in net.
Â
The win also takes the Lions to the top of the OUA West standings with a perfect 6-0-0 mark for 18 points. Currently, they are the only team in the conference to have no losses and no ties in the season so far.         Â
Â
The Lions have a week of rest before they're back on the road for an away game against the Windsor Lancers. The game will start at 1pm on Saturday (Sept. 26), where the Lions will be looking to claim another win. They will be back in action at home on Thursday, Oct. 8 to take on the rival Laurier Golden Hawks in a battle of undefeated teams beginning at 6pm. Â
