LIONS CRUSH VARSITY BLUES FOR SECOND STRAIGHT WIN

The York University Lions women's rugby team came away with an 80-0 win against the cross-town rival University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday evening (Sept. 19) at the Varsity Centre.

Seven members of the York squad scored against the Blues. Leading the way in tries was current Lions female athlete of the week Cheyenne Legerton (Brampton, Ont.), who saw the try zone four times during the match and now has six on the season in just two contests.

The match began with a well-balanced attack by both the Blues and Lions, and the two sides traded multiple well-executed scrums until the flood gates of Lions scoring power broke open. Bethany Pilkington (Mono, Ont.) began the scoring 11 minutes in that broke the scoreless game.

Soon after the try, Legerton scored her first of the match, making the score 12-0 following the conversion by Pilkington. Just over three minutes following the second try of the match, another Lion found the try zone, this time veteran Sage Smith (Niagara Falls, Ont.).

After a Marty Alaimo (Toronto) try at the 29th minute made the score 24-0 for the Lions, Jonelle Mars (Scarborough, Ont.), Sasha Seymour (Mississauga, Ont.) and Charlotte West (Souris, Manitoba) all scored within four minutes of each other to give the Lions a 43-0 lead.

Legerton scored her second try of the match just after halftime, which inspired Jodi Stewart (Flesherton, Ont.) to join in on the scoring action and eventually helping the Lions build a 64-0 lead. Legerton dominated the final stages of the game, scoring her third and fourth tries.

In addition to the 20 points put up by Legerton, Catherine Belanger (Orleans, Ont.) added 14 points on seven conversions.

The Lions are now 2-0 on the season after last week's 38-23 victory over the Trent Excalibur to start the year, and they are one of two teams in the OUA Russell Division with an undefeated mark.

Next weekend the Lions will look to extend their winning streak against the 1-1 Western Mustangs in London, Ont., on Saturday (Sept. 26) at 11am. They are back home to take on the Queen's Gaels on Friday, Oct. 2 at 7pm.
