LIONS REMAIN UNBEATEN WITH WINS OVER VARSITY BLUES AND MARTLETS

The York University Lions women's tennis team extended its unbeaten streak to 15 matches this weekend (Sept. 26-27) with a pair of convincing victories over the Toronto Varsity Blues and McGill Martlets.

The Lions knocked off the Varsity Blues 7-0 at the University of Toronto on Saturday and the Martlets 6-1 at home on Sunday. The wins stretched their season record to 4-0 and added to the undefeated 8-0 mark they put up in the regular season last year.

Also this weekend, the men's team faced the same two opponents and was defeated in both, by a 7-0 score to the Varsity Blues and a 5-2 result to the Redmen.

Nikki Carnovale (Woodbridge, Ont.), Ivana Banovic (Oshawa, Ont.), Isabella Baston (Toronto) and Paulina Grosjean (Nyon, Switzerland) all went undefeated in singles over the two ties. Carnovale, a rookie playing out of the top spot in the line-up, was dominant in each of her matches, winning the first 6-3, 6-0 and the second 6-4, 6-1.

Reigning OUA rookie of the year Eugenie Lim Ah Tock (Curepipe, Mauritius) also picked up a singles win against the Martlets, while Heather Hills (Markham, Ont.) and Randa Hassan (Toronto) won their singles matches against the Varsity Blues.

On the men's side, Glen Katsnelson (Thornhill, Ont.) earned the lone singles victory for the Lions by taking down McGill's Maxime Charbonneau 7-6(2), 7-5.

The Lions also earned the doubles point against the Redmen, with Filip Obucina (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Pranav Yardi (Mississauga, Ont.) winning 8-6 and Tre Eli (Toronto) and Kevin Borsos (Everett, Ont.) winning 8-5. Obucina and Yardi were also doubles winners against the Varsity Blues.

The Lions have one more weekend of the regular season and will host the McMaster Marauders and Montreal Carabins at the Tennis Canada Courts next weekend. The tie against the Marauders is set for Saturday (Oct. 3) at 12pm, and the Lions will return the following day to face the Carabins beginning at 10am.
