LIONS DOUBLE UP ON BADGERS FOR SECOND WIN OF 2016

The No. 10 nationally-ranked York University Lions men's hockey team was victorious on Friday night (Jan. 15) as they defeated the Brock Badgers by a score of 4-2 at the Seymour-Hannah Centre in St. Catharines, Ont.

The Lions peppered Badgers goaltender Real Cormier with a total of 40 shots on Friday night, while only surrendering 22 to the Badgers.

Trevor Petersen (Thornhill, Ont.) was once again all over the score sheet as he added two goals and one assist. He now has 21 points in 18 games played this season. Joining Petersen with a three-point night was Greg Milner (Watford, Ont.) as he scored an empty net goal to go with two assists. Milner has an impressive eight points in his last three games.

York came ready to play in St. Catharines as they jumped ahead 1-0 early in the first period on Petersen's first of the night, but the Badgers retaliated by scoring with seconds remaining in the frame. The Lions led in the shot department 14-5 going into the second period.

In the second the Badgers carried that late first period momentum and beat Chris Perugini (King City, Ont.) to give them the 2-1 advantage, but the lead would be short-lived as the Lions attacked and Reid Jackman (Etobicoke, Ont.) potted his sixth goal on the season just three minutes later, tying the game up at two goals apiece.

Less than one minute after the Jackman goal, Petersen joined in with his second of the night which regained the lead for the Lions heading into the third.

The third period was once again dominated by the Lions as they held the Badgers off the score sheet, and with a Milner empty net goal the Lions finished with a 4-2 victory.

The Lions are now 12-5-3 on the season after Friday's win over the Badgers, who now fall to 6-10-4. The first-place Lions will look for their third straight win on Saturday (Jan. 16) when they host the second-place Western Mustangs at 7pm at Canlan Ice Sports.
