The York University Lions field hockey team had an impressive weekend in Kingston, Ont., earning a 2-2 tie against the Guelph Gryphons and picking up a 5-0 victory over the McGill Martlets.
Against the Gryphons on Saturday, the Lions came back from two goals down to earn the draw thanks to back-to-back goals by
Paige Warner (Port Moody, B.C.) and
Sydney McFaul (Coquitlam, B.C.) just four minutes apart late in the second half.
Guelph had scored twice in the opening 14 minutes to take the lead but a strong game by the Lions gave them a crucial point in the standings and the result remains the only game the undefeated Gryphons have not won.
One day later, the Lions returned to the pitch and posted the lopsided result against the winless Martlets. The game was quiet to begin as it took until the 33
rd minute before
Michelle Per (Port Moody, B.C.) found the back of the net, but in the second half they exploded for four goals to put the game well out of reach.
Per added her second of the day in the 44
th minute, followed by
Ravneet Kalkat (Mississauga, Ont.) in the 59
th minute,
Michelle Kelly (Goderich, Ont.) in the 64
th minute and Warner in the 67
th.
The Lions are now comfortably in third place in the OUA standings with a 4-1-1 record for 13 points, with two games in hand over Guelph and Toronto, who sit ahead of them.
The Lions have a busy weekend coming up with four games on the schedule. They will travel to Guelph, Ont., on Wednesday night (Oct. 5) to face the Gryphons again, and will face the Warriors in Waterloo, Ont., on Saturday morning at 10:45am. The squad will round out its weekend with a pair of games on home turf at Alumni Field, first against the Martlets at 9am and then against the Queen's Gaels at 2:45pm.
