Greg Milner scored 55 seconds into the second overtime period to lead the York University Lions men's hockey team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over the defending OUA champion UQTR Patriotes at Canlan Ice Sports on Friday night.
The final goal capped a wild finish to a game that saw only one goal scored through the first two and a half periods, and then three in a six-minute span to close out the contest.
After a scoreless first period, York team captain
Shayne Rover (Newmarket, Ont.) finally broke the deadlock at 15:35 of the second on his second goal of the season, with assists to
Nicholas Geiser (Bolton, Ont.) and
Kyle Campbell (Halifax), for a 1-0 lead the Lions carried into the second intermission.
The Patriotes levelled the score at 1-1 at 13:55 of the third period when reigning CIS player of the year Guillaume Asselin scored his seventh of the year. Less than two minute later, the Patriotes took their first lead on a goal by Carl-Antoine Delisle.
It looked as though the Patriotes were going to skate away from Canlan with a win, but with only 16 seconds remaining and goaltender
Mack Shields (Saskatoon, Sask.) on the bench for the extra attacker,
Steven Janes (Etobicoke, Ont.) scored the equalizer to force the extra frame.
The first overtime solved nothing, but less than one minute into the second Milner ended the game with his seventh tally of the season. The win pushed the Lions' record to 7-3-1 and keeps them in second place in the OUA West standings. UQTR's loss dropped them to 6-4-1 on the season.
Shields earned the win between the pipes and made 31 saves for his fifth victory this year.
The Lions will return to home ice on Saturday night (Nov. 12) when they face the No. 6 nationally-ranked Concordia Stingers at Canlan Ice Sports. Puck drop is set for 7pm.
