Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

REDMEN TOP LIONS WITH LATE OVERTIME GOAL

The York University Lions men's hockey team suffered a 3-2 overtime defeat to the No. 8 nationally-ranked McGill Redmen at McConnell Arena in Montreal on Friday night.

The Lions picked up one point with the loss to fall to 7-4-2 on the season and remain in second place in the OUA West standings. The Redmen won their second game in a row to improve to 9-2-1 and are second in the OUA East.

The first period was mostly uneventful, with just 12 total shots on goal between the two teams. Just when it looked as though the squads would head into the first intermission scoreless, the Lions got on the board with a goal by defenceman Shayne Rover (Newmarket, Ont.), his third of the season, at 19:29 for a 1-0 York lead.

The action picked up in the second period with the Remend outshooting the Lions 13-9, but neither team could find the back of the net as York rookie goaltender Alex Fotinos (Toronto) and his counterpart at McGill, Jacob Gervais-Chouinard, both stood tall.

It didn't take long for the Redmen to even the score as the third period started as they scored just 1:01 into the frame on a goal by Patrick Delisle-Houde.

At 15:32 the Redmen took their first lead of the game on a power play goal by Simon Tardif-Richard. The lead lasted less than three minutes, however, as Daniel Nikandrov (Richmond Hill, Ont.) scored his second goal of the season at 18:12, also on a power play.

The Lions picked up the one point in the standings with less than two minutes remaining, but they were unable to steal the victory. At 4:20 of the first overtime period, and with York's Kyle Campbell (Halifax) in the box for tripping, Dominic Talbot-Tassi ended the game and earned his team the extra point.

Fotinos made 32 saves on 35 shots faced, while Gervais-Chouinard made 19 in the win.

The Lions will be back in action again on Saturday evening when they travel to the nation's capital to face the Ottawa Gee-Gees at the Minto Sports Rink beginning at 7pm.
