The York University Lions women's hockey team was defeated by a score of 2-1 in double overtime by the Waterloo Warriors at Columbia Ice Field on Saturday afternoon.
Â
In the first period of play the Warriors would capitalize off of a power play at 3:24 when Rachel Marriott scored the first goal of the game. The Lions were unable to beat Waterloo goaltender Stephanie Sluys in the first period and it would end with a 1-0 Warriors lead.
Â
All 20 minutes of the second period went scoreless as both goalies put on a clinic. York goaltender
Lauren Dubie (London, Ont.) would end up recording 19 saves in the game, including six in the middle frame.
Â
The third period saw more offensive action from the Lions as they scored their first goal of the contest in a very similar way as the Warriors. At 1:32
Leah Hibbert (Winnipeg) scored on a power play to tie the game. The assists were credited to
Rianna Langford (Collingwood, Ont.) and
Lauren Cavarzan (Hamilton, Ont.).
Â
The third period would end in a 1-1 tie and the game would head to overtime.
Â
One overtime period was not enough to settle the score, but the Warriors' Angela MacDonald scored the game-winning goal at 1:41 of the second extra period for the Waterloo victory.
Â
With the loss the Lions move to 1-1-5-3 on the season. Their next game will take place on Sunday afternoon when they travel to London, Ont., to take on the Western Mustangs.
