The York University Lions wrestling team finished in second place in the overall standings at their home York Open meet on Sunday at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
The squad was led by rookie
Shady El-Nahas (Toronto), who won all of his matches to capture the individual gold medal in the men's 100kg weight class. He defeated Montreal's Hamed Rowshani in the final and was named the tournament male MVP for his efforts.
El-Nahas, also a national-level judoka, is undefeated on the season at 12-0 and also won gold medals at Concordia and McMaster.
Also reaching the podium at the York Open was his brother,
Mohab El-Nahas (Mississauga, Ont.), who won the silver medal in the men's 82kg division. He reached the final before falling to McMaster's Brad MaGarrey.
Also winning a medal was
Maddy Delle Donne (Mississauga, Ont.), who picked up the bronze in the women's 82kg weight class.
Two other Lions wrestlers,
Ali Koca (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and
Wendy Roza (Maple, Ont.), just missed out on the podium in their respective divisions with fourth-place finishes.
The Brock Badgers finished in first place in the team standings, while the McMaster Marauders were third.
The Lions will now be off until the new year and will return to action on Jan. 14 when they travel to St. Catharines, Ont., for the annual Brock Open.
