On Friday night (Feb. 19) the York University women's volleyball team ended their last home game of the season with a 3-1 loss against the No. 7 McMaster Marauders at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
Â
The Marauders managed to grab the upper hand early in the game when they took the first set in a 25-14 victory.
Â
The Lions had a brilliant sequence midway through the action that involved a diving dig from
Sabah Kalim (Toronto), and a set from
Kirsten Dillon (Surrey, B.C.) that allowed
Keeva MacLeod (Ottawa) to tip the ball over the Marauders wall for a point.
Â
In the second set the Lions picked up the intensity and came out with a 25-21 victory to tie up the game at 1 set apiece. Kalim dominated from left court with cheeky tips and convincing spikes, while
Heather Setka (Winnipeg) and
Celeste Witzell (Kitchener, Ont.) exposed the holes in the Marauders defense.
Â
However despite the Lions' success, the Marauders came back to take the third set with a 25-15 score.
Cadence Currie (Scarborough, Ont.) spiked in a remarkable kill from left court, but it wasn't enough to slow down the Marauders.
The Marauders carried the momentum into the fourth set where they claimed another 25-15 victory. Taylor Brisebois's game point finalized the 3-1 Marauders win to end the game.
Â
For the Marauders Brisebois, Maicee Sorensen, and Rachel Woock totaled a game high of 10 kills each, while Sorensen led the pack with 14.5 points. Setter Michelle Chelladurai had 30 assists.
Â
On the Lions' end, Setka had nine points to her name with seven kills and one service ace. Witzell had 7.5 points with five kills, two service aces, and ten digs. Dillon finished with 21 assists.
Â
With the result added to both teams' records the Lions (5-13) remain in fifth place in the OUA East while the Marauders are tied at the top of the OUA West table with the Western Mustangs with 30 points and the same 15-3 record.
Â
On Feb. 21 (Sunday) the Lions' 2016 season will come to a close after they take on the Brock Badgers in St. Catherine's, Ont. First serve will be at 2pm at Bob Davis Gymnasium.
