The York University Lions women's volleyball team won their final game of the season on Sunday (Feb.21) defeating the Brock Badgers three sets to two in St. Catharines, Ont.
The Lions were led by a dominate performance from
Celeste Witzell (Kitchener, Ont.) who finished the match with a game high in points with 17, including 13 kills and three blocked shots. Joining Witzell with an impressive stat line on Sunday was
Cadence Currie (Scarborough, Ont.), who finished with 15 points and 13 kills.
The Lions won the first set handily 25-17, but the second set was when the Badgers came biting back. The set came down to the wire as both team exchanged scoring plays, the Badgers got the best of the Lions and pulled out a 25-23 win.
The Badgers used the second set to fuel their momentum leading into the third and Maddie Brown was leading the charge. Brown finished Sunday with a team lead in points and blocks, while supplying a handful of kills which eventually helped the Badgers capture the third set 25-22.
The Lions
Kirsten Dillon (Surrey, B.C.) assisted the Lions back to their first set ways as they broke out to a large lead, resulting in a 25-18 win. Dillon finished the match with a game high 39 assists, which was six more than the entire Badger total.
The fifth and deciding set was back and forth, but the never down and out Lions marched to an 18-16 win, improving their record to 6-13. The Lions regular season is in the books, as they finished in the middle of the pack in the OUA East standings.
