Women's Track & Field

SIX MORE MEDALS FOR LIONS ON DAY TWO OF OUA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The York Lions track and field team's continued their successful conference championships as they won six more medals today (Feb. 27) on day two of the OUA Championships in Windsor, Ont.

Thrower Brittany Crew (East York, Ont.) continued her spectacular season as she broke her second OUA Championships record of the weekend winning the gold medal in the women's weight throw with a toss of 18.75m. Crew set the OUA Championships record in the shot put (17.49m) on day one and looks to be in fine form as she will be the favourite in both events at the CIS Championships in just under two weeks time.

A pair of other Lions veterans showed their still getting better as their university careers come to close, as graduating seniors David McKay (Victoria) and Sheereen Harris (Toronto) both set personal bests in their respective events.

McKay out vaulted the competition in the men's pole vault with a height of 5.25m, setting a new personal best over his previous high of 5.20m set last year at the 2015 CIS Championships. McKay has now won gold in the pole vault in an incredible five straight years at the OUA Championships. Harris meanwhile picked up her second medal of the weekend with a second place finish in the women's 60m in a time of 7.50 seconds, besting her previous personal best of 7.62 seconds. Harris also won the gold medal on day one in the women's 300m in a time of 38.50 seconds

Elsewhere on the track, Bismark Boateng (Etobicoke, Ont.) defended his gold medal from the 2015 OUA Championships by claiming first place again in the men's 60m in a time of 6.73 seconds. This was the second medal of the weekend for Boateng as he picked up the silver medal in the men's 300m on day one.

The Lions also brought home a pair of medals in the men's triple jump, as Nick Fyffe (Vancouver) cruised to the gold medal with a jump of 14.87m. Fyffe was on his game from the start of the competition as his five recorded jumps were the five longest leaps of the day. Fourth-year Lion Richard Jansen (Bradford, Ont.) reached the podium at the OUA Championships for the second time in his career as he won the bronze medal with a jump of 14.22m. Jansen previously won the gold medal in the event in 2014.

In total, the Lions won 13 medals (7 gold, 3 silver, 3 bronze) on the weekend, as the women finished in fourth place overall in the team standings and the men finished in fifth.
