On Feb. 6 (Saturday), the York University women's basketball team lost to the Guelph Gryphons by a score of 75-56 at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
Â
With the result, both teams remain in the same position of the OUA standings. The Lions (2-12) are seated in fourth place in the OUA East, while the Gryphons (7-6) sit in third place in the OUA Central.
Â
The Lions started strong off the tip off with
Katrina Collins-Samuels (Hamilton, Ont.) grabbing the first two points of the game after driving towards the basket and hitting a nice jump shot.
Â
However the Gryphons were able to control the first quarter from that point on with some disciplined and high-pressure defense and ended up with a 27-13 lead heading into the second quarter.
Â
In the second quarter, the Gryphons maintained their lead and went into halftime with a 37-29 lead.
Nina Guzina (Toronto) hit two three-pointers in the quarter to keep the Lions in the game while
Jackie Koudys (Smithville, Ont.) made it a 12 point game by hitting a shot just before the halftime buzzer.Â
Â
The Gryphons pulled away in the second half and had  a 65-44 lead by the end of the third quarter. Guzina did her best to keep the Lions in the game with eight points in the frame. In the fourth quarter the Gryphons stayed in control and were able to put the Lions away, finishing the match with a 75-56 victory.
Â
Overall Gryphons Dana Balkom was the game's leading scorer with 17 points and including shooting nine for ten from the free throw line. Bridget Atkinson (14 points) and Kate MacTavish (13 points) also had strong games as they both sunk all of their free throws and tallied five field goals apiece.
Â
For the Lions, Guzina led with 16 points off the bench while
Ishanaa Seupersadsingh (Markham, Ont) tallied nine points, and Koudys and
Shauney Fischer (Wallaceburg, Ont.) each had eight points.
Â
Next week the Lions will rest up before they take on the OUA West's second placed Windsor Lancers on home court. Action gets underway at 6pm on Feb. 12.
