The No. 4 nationally-ranked York University Lions women's soccer team picked up its sixth straight win to start the season with a 2-0 victory over the McMaster Marauders at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 17).
Â
The Lions improved to 6-0-0 with the win and are one of four teams in the OUA West without a loss this season, but remain the only squad in the division with an unblemished record. The Marauders are still winless on the year at 0-5-2.
Â
The Lions wasted little time getting the upper hand in this contest as
Marilyn Grammenopoulos (Whitby, Ont.) scored her first of the season less than six minutes in on a pass from
Christina Morelli (Markham, Ont.) for a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Lions maintained that advantage into the halftime break and finally got an insurance goal in the 63
rd minute off the foot of
Kiyani Johnson (Markham, Ont.), her fourth of the season.
Â
That was all goalkeeper
Taylor Grant (Brampton, Ont.) would need as she made three saves in the game to earn the clean sheet. Her counterpart, Christina Abbatangelo made five saves in the loss.
Â
Overall, the Lions outshot the Marauders 11-8 and also had five corner kicks, compared to just five for McMaster.
Â
The Lions will now head out on the road for their next six contests, beginning with a trip to Guelph, Ont., on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 18) for a 1pm kick-off. The Gryphons have also yet to record a loss this season at 3-0-2.
