LIONS CRUSH BLUES IN REGULAR SEASON HOME FINALE

The York University Lions women's rugby team dominated the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday night (Sept. 30) and defeated them by a score of 71-0 at the York Rugby Field.

It was the second straight win for the Lions and it was a full on display of the teams uncontainable potential. The Lions are now 3-1 on the season, while the Varsity Blues are still winless on the year at 0-3.

Brooke Jensen (Toronto, Ont.) showed great will in refusing to go down as she scored her only try of the game 13 minutes in for the opening score to make it 5-0.

A streaking Tobi Owotomo (Mississauga, Ont.) plunged into the endzone for her first of four tries on the night less than two minutes. Each try showed Owotomo's unbelievable athleticism and power as a ball carrier, often making defenders look like pylons.

The second of six Lions to make it onto the scorecard was fourth-year Sasha Seymour (Mississauga, Ont.) with a powerful jolt into the end zone after a great methodical drive down the field.

Catherine Belanger (Orleans, Ont.) added three conversions and the Lions led 31-0 at the half.

Fifth-year Jonelle Mars (Scarborough, Ont.) was the first Lion to score with an absolute blazing try from half field only six minutes into the second half. The unstoppable early offensive attack weakened the will of the Blues defence. This was very evident once third0year Petra Woods (Brampton, Ont.) gashed the Blues as she weaved and bobbed through defenders to obtain her first of two tries.

Possibly the most impressive performance of the night was from second-year player Michela Stratton (Fort Erie, Ont.), who showed absolutely unstoppable top end speed on both of her two tries of the night. Each try was as impressive as the other as she split two Varsity Blue defenders on back-to-back drives.

The backbone of the offensive explosion came from the stout and stingy Lions defence. The Varsity Blues were bombarded by a sea of red that could not be parted every single time they touched the ball offensively.

The Lions' next game will take place on Friday (Oct. 7) against the Queen's Gaels in Kingston, Ont., their final game of the season. The Lions have already clinched a post-season berth in the OUA Russell Division and will be playing for home field advantage in next week's finale.
