The York University Lions track and field team picked up four medals at the Fred Foot Memorial Meet at the University of Toronto on Saturday.
Leading the way were pole vaulters
Samuel Adams (Glasgow, Scotland) and
Jason Clare (Nanaimo, B.C.), who finished second and third, respectively, in their event. Adams, who was fourth at both the OUA and U SPORTS championships last year as a rookie, hit a season-best distance of 4.55 metres, while first-year athlete Clare topped 4.45 metres to finish just behind him. Both of their heights also qualified them for the OUA championships at the end of February.
Also picking up an individual medal was
Jonathan Raspanti (Woodbridge, Ont.) in the weight throw. He recorded a distance of 12.03 metres to win the bronze.
The final medal of the weekend came courtesy of the men's 4x200m relay team, where
Mark Hutchinson (Oro Medonte, Ont.),
Emeka Agada (Elmira, Ont.),
Soman Baig (Pickering, Ont.) and
Jhonathan Calderon (Mississauga, Ont.) combined to cross the finish line in a time of 1:36.66 for the silver medal.
The best result from the women's team came on the track from
Meira Dholakia (Richmond Hill, Ont.), who finished in fourth place in the 60m hurdles in a time of 9.52 seconds.
Next weekend some members of the track and field team will be in University Center, Michigan, to compete at the Saginaw Valley State Invitational. The whole team will reconvene the following weekend for the annual York Open at the Toronto Track and Field Centre beginning on Friday, Feb. 3.
