The No. 10 nationally-ranked York University Lions men's hockey team picked up its fourth straight victory on Saturday night with a 3-2 win over the Lakehead Thunderwolves at Memorial Gardens in Thunder Bay, Ont.
Â
The Lions have now played in five straight one-goal games and have improved their record to 17-6-2. They sit comfortably in second place with 36 points, seven ahead of third-place Windsor.
Â
The Lions wasted little time getting on the board as defenceman
Derek Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.) scored just 90 second into the contest for an early 1-0 lead. The visiting squad stretched it to two in the middle of the frame courtesy of
Bryce Milson (Miramichi, N.B.), who found the back of the net at 13:18 for a 2-0 advantage.
Â
Lakehead got one back just before the end of the period when Brennen Dubchak scored with just one second remaining in the period.
Â
The second was much less eventful with just one goal added to the scoreboard.
Greg Milner (Watford, Ont.) scored on a power play to pad the lead, tallying the only goal of the period.
Â
The Thunderwolves outshot the Lions 12-5 in each of the final two periods and got another goal at 15:10 from Kellen Aisworth on a power play, but the Lions shut the door when it mattered most and
Mack Shields (Saskatoon, Sask.) made 30 saves to pick up his OUA-leading 12
th win of the season.
Â
The Lions have just three games remaining in the regular season starting next weekend on the road in Sudbury, Ont., against the Laurentian Voyaguers. Puck drop is set for 8pm.
