LIONS BOW TO RAMS IN SEASON OPENER

The York University Lions women's hockey team suffered a tough 7-2 loss in their season-opening game Sunday to the visiting Ryerson Rams at Canlan Ice Sports.

The Rams' defender Melanie Camacho scored the first goal of the game. Teammates Keelin Farren and Kryshanda Green had the assists on that goal. The Rams continued the scoring with another on a power play by second-year Lauren Nicholson, assisted by Madison Lalonde. The score was 2-0 for the Rams at the end of the first period.

The Lions brought more aggression in the second period, but the Rams were still able to maintain control of the scoring. Alex Rodriguez, assisted by Brooklyn Gemmill, added another goal 13:33 on a power play, and Ailish Forfar scored just 40 seconds before the buzzer, assisted by Lalonde. The score was 4-0 at the end of the second period.

The third period started out the same way with the Rams scoring, this time by Kayla Karbonik, assisted by Green.

Things started to look up for the Lions when second-year defender Taylor Davison scored on a power play with assists to Brooke Anderson and Kelsey McHolm. Much to the dismay of the Lions, the Rams were able to regain possession of the puck and scored back-to-back goals. Lalonde, assisted by Alyssa Connoley and Nicholson, scored on a power play, and Green, assisted by Karbonik and Gemmill, scored on an empty Lions net.

In the last minute of play, Lions forward Steffei Samuel scored another goal for the Lions, assisted by Anderson and Caitlin Lee. Samuel's goal concluded the scoring for the game.

The Lions will take on the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Thursday, Oct. 19 at Varsity Arena. Game time is at 7pm. The Lions will return home to Canlan Ice Sports on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 2pm to face the visiting Guelph Gryphons.
