The York University Lions women's soccer team has the longest current winning streak in the OUA at four matches after Sunday's 2-0 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds at Alumni Field.
The run has vaulted the Lions into fifth place in the OUA West Division standings with a 5-6-4 record for 19 points. They sit three clear of the Windsor Lancers with one game remaining. The Thunderbirds have yet to pick up a win this season and sit at the bottom of the division at 0-14.
The Lions fired 14 shots at the Thunderbirds in the first half alone but it took until the 38
th minute for them to take the lead. They finally did so when rookie
Ola Olatoye scored the first goal of her career with an assist to
Christina Morelli to make it 1-0.
Kristen Riquelme added her first of the season in the 68
th minute for the insurance marker, but they did not need it against a Thunderbirds squad that managed only two shots and one on net.
York goalkeeper
Taylor Grant made one save, while her Algoma counterpart Khadyja Claxton stopped nine of the 11 shots she faced.
The Lions have one game remaining this season and will host the Windsor Lancers at Alumni Field on Saturday at 1pm looking for a win to lock down fifth place in the division.
