The York University Lions women's tennis team earned a pair of wins over the Montreal Carabins and Waterloo Warriors on the final weekend of the regular season to finish undefeated for the fourth straight year.
The Lions have now won 26 straight regular-season matches after defeating Montreal 4-1 on Friday afternoon and Waterloo 6-1 on Saturday.
Against the reigning national silver-medal winning Carabins,
Eugenie Lim Ah Tock,
Isabella Baston,
Sara Krupica and
Randa Hassan all won their singles matches in straight sets to earn the four points the team needed to take the tie.
The quartet was just as impressive against the Warriors the following day, again winning all of their singles matches. The fifth point came courtesy of
Aryanne Hart-Dixon, also in straight sets, and the Lions also earned the doubles point by sweeping the three matches.
The men played a pair of close ties against the same two teams, falling 4-2 to the Carabins and 4-3 to the Warriors.
The Lions and Warriors have played a number of close matches in recent years, including in last year's OUA quarter-finals where the Lions upset the Warriors by the same 4-3 score. But on Saturday it was Waterloo coming out on top, with the doubles point proving to be the difference.
Andres Findlay,
Tre Eli and
Karan Negi each won their singles matches for the three Lions' points. Eli and
Georg Zoidl were also victorious in their singles matches against the Carabins.
The Lions will now stay local and head to the Mayfair Tennis Club for the weekend for the OUA championships, which are being hosted by the University of Toronto beginning on Friday and wrapping up on Sunday.
