The No. 7 nationally-ranked York University Lions men's hockey team gave up four unanswered goals in the third period in a 5-3 loss to the Windsor Lancers on the road on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The first period saw a lot of action. The first goal of the game was scored within the first minute by
Trevor Petersen and assisted by team captain
Shayne Rover. Windsor followed up with a goal of their own at 7:19, with Ryan Shaw scoring and Kody Gagnon and Kyle Hope assisting.
Â
The Lions took the puck back a few minutes later and
Josh LaFrance added another goal for the Lions. Assisting LaFrance were Rover and
Morgan Messenger. This brought the score at the end of the period to 2-1 in favour of the Lions.
Â
Unlike the first period, the second period was very quiet with neither team scoring a goal.
Â
However, scoring resumed in the first minute of the third period with the Lancers' Konner Haas, assisted by Hope and Kyle Haas, just 29 seconds in. To the disappointment of the Lions, the Lancers scored again to take their first lead of the game. This time, it was Chris Scott with Gagnon and Eric Palazzola with the assists.
Â
The Lancers kept adding to their lead with a goal from Konner Haas (assisted by Josh Slegers and Alex Friesen) on a power play and another from Shaw (assisted by Dan Beaudoin and Jonathan Reinhart) on an empty net.
Â
The Lions regained control of the puck in the final minute of play with a goal by
Andrew Doyle, assisted by
Giusten Annetta and Rover, but it wasn't enough to catch up and the game ended 5-3 in favour of the Lancers.
Â
The Lions fall to a 9-4-0 season record but continue to sit in first place in the OUA West standings. Windsor improved to 5-4-3 with the win.
Â
The Lions will head to Ottawa next weekend where they will face off with the Carleton Ravens on Friday, Nov. 24, and the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday, Nov. 25. Both games start at 7pm. They will return to Toronto for their last two games on 2017. They will look to redeem themselves on home ice Friday, Dec. 1 at 7pm when they take on the Laurier Golden Hawks, who defeated them 6-2 earlier in the season, and the following day they will visit the Ryerson Rams at 7:15pm.
