The York University Lions women's hockey team ended the 2017 portion of their schedule with a big 4-0 shutout victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs at Canlan Ice Sports on Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Lions spent a lot of time in front on the Voyageurs' net in the first period, but couldn't find a way to get the puck past goaltender Karen Collins. Luckily, the Voyageurs had an equally hard time scoring. The first period remained scoreless.
Â
The first goal of the game came from
Kelsey McHolm in the middle of the second period on a power play. She was assisted by
Brooke Anderson. Despite many other close chances, this was the only goal in the second period, and the Lions led 1-0 heading into the home stretch of the game.
Â
McHolm did not seem content with only one goal, and added yet another power play goal four minutes into the third period.
Courtney Gardiner had the assist on this goal.
Â
Sarah Power added the Lions' third goal on the Voyageurs' empty net at 17:42. To finish the game,
Erin Locke – with the assistance of
Chelsea Tucker – added another goal on the Voyageurs' still empty net with less than a minute of play remaining.
Â
The Lions outshot the Voyageurs significantly, making 41 shots on net compared to the Voyageurs' 14. This win improves the Lions' season record to 4-0-8-1. Additionally, Lions goaltender
Lauren Dubie earned her second shutout of the season.
Â
The Lions now have the long December break ahead of them and will return to OUA action on Saturday, Jan. 6 against the Brock Badgers. Puck drop is scheduled for 2pm.
