LIONS POST BIG RESULTS IN MEETS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BORDER

Members of the York University Lions track and field team had another solid weekend of competition at a pair of meets on both sides of the border. Collectively, the squad won two medals at the Spire NCAA Division I Invitational in Geneva, Ohio, and another five at the Windsor Team Challenge in Windsor, Ont.

In Ohio, Holly Pitters (Mississauga, Ont.) continued her tremendous season by breaking her own school record in the long jump with a distance of 6.15 metres to win the gold medal in the event. She had set the previous mark earlier this year at the Can Am Classic in Windsor, Ont.

Also finding the podium in Ohio was Nicholas Fyffe (Vancouver), who recorded a distance of 14.81 metres in the triple jump to capture the bronze medal.

At the Windsor Team Challenge, the Lions were led by their sprinters with four of their medals coming on the track. Christy Ihunaegbo (East York, Ont.) ran to the silver medal in the 300m with a time of 39.90 seconds to post the best result by the women's team.

In the men's competition, Demari Grant (Brampton, Ont.) also won an individual silver medal in the 60m with a time of 6.98 seconds.

The other two medals on the track came in the relays. Xavier Jehovah (Toronto), Daniele Orsini (Etobicoke, Ont.), Jalen Pidlubny (Scarborough, Ont.) and Mark Hutchinson (Oro Medonte, Ont.) raced to bronze in the 4x200m relay in a time of 1:31.83, while Hutchinson, Orsini and Pidlubny were joined by Joshua Ching (Scarborough, Ont.) in the 4x400m to also finish in third place with a time of 3:29.33.

Rounding out the medals was Mukonka Siakalenge (Baden, Ont.), who set a new personal-best mark in the triple jump with a distance of 13.76 metres to win the bronze medal.

Many members of the track and field teams will be off this weekend as they prepare for the OUA championships, which York will host at the Toronto Track and Field Centre Feb. 24-25. Lions who are still trying to reach the OUA automatic qualifying standard in their respective events will compete at the Hal Brown Last Chance meet at the University of Toronto or the Guelph Last Chance meet at the University of Guelph, both taking place on Saturday.
