The York University Lions men's hockey team played a hard-fought game against the Laurentian Voyageurs but ended with a 3-2 loss in double overtime at Countryside Arena in Sudbury, Ont.
It took until 17:11 of the first period until a goal was scored, when
Greg Milner (Watford, Ont.) found the back of the net to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. It was short-lived, however, as Dylan Fitze scored on the power play just four seconds before the end of the period to level the score at 1-1.
The only goal of the second period came courtesy of team scoring leader
Derek Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.), who added to his lead with another tally to make it 2-1 at 14:14.
It looked as though the Lions were going to hang on until the end as they maintained their lead through most of the third, but with less than three minutes remaining the Voyageurs equalized the score again on another power play marker by Andrew Tessier to pick up an important point in the OUA standings.
After the first overtime period solved nothing, Elliott Richardson gave the home team the comeback victory when he scored at 2:33 of the second overtime for the victory. The Voyageurs improved to 9-12-4 with the win, while the Lions fell to 17-6-3 but continue to hold down second place in the OUA West standings with 37 points.
The Lions will continue their northern road trip on Saturday when they head to North Bay, Ont., to face the Nipissing Lakers in a contest beginning at 7:15pm. The contest will be the team's last road game of the regular season.
