LIONS FALL TO FOURTH PLACE IN OUA EAST WITH LOSS TO LAKERS

The York University Lions women's volleyball team took a trip north to face off against the Nipissing Lakers for a Saturday afternoon showdown and were swept in straight sets.

The Lions were fresh off a bye week and were facing a Lakers team that they had previously taken down in straight sets, and on Saturday Nipissing returned the favour to improve to 7-6 on the season and take over sole possession of third place in the OUA East standings. The Lions, meanwhile, fell to fourth place at 6-7 and are tied with the Queen's Gaels with 12 points.

Early on in the opening set the Lakers jumped out to a 11-5 lead. From this point forward the Lions were playing a game of catch up and they were not able to completely bridge the gap. One of the main contributors of the Lions' 22 points was Rachel Adams (Orangeville, Ont.), who tallied four kills in the first set. Adams would end up leading the team in kills with seven. The Lakers would take the first set by a score of 25-22.

Sarah Williams (Oakville, Ont.) and Melissa Monkhouse (Guelph, Ont.) recorded three kills apiece in the second set in York's attempt to tie the game at one. Once again the effort fell just short as another early jump was too much for the Lions to overcome. The Lakers took the second set by a score of 25-22.

In the final set of the match the Lions would continue to battle. In this set it was Celeste Witzell (Kitchener, Ont.) who would record three kills of her own, while a slew of other Lions displayed their ability to capture aces off of serves. Witzell would total five kills in the match. The Lakers would take the final set by a score of 25-21 as the ball did not seem to roll the Lions way all game.

The Lions' next game will take place on Saturday when they travel to St. Catharines, Ont., to battle the Brock Badgers. The match will begin at 2pm.
