The York University Lions track and field team had a strong showing at its home York Open meet, winning 14 medals at the Toronto Track and Field Centre this past weekend.
The women's team claimed seven of those medals, led by fourth-year runner
Mikeisha Bobb (London, Ont.), who claimed three. She was the gold medallist in the 60m hurdles with a season-best time of 8.65 seconds, and won the bronze medal in the 300m with a time of 40.66 seconds. She ran the opening leg for the 4x200m relay team that crossed the finish line in second place and was joined on the podium by teammates
Shania Payne (Maple Ridge, B.C.),
Nicolette Witherspoon (Pickering, Ont.) and
Stella Isaac (Toronto).
Bobb also competed in the 60m, finishing in 11
th place. She qualified for the OUA championships in all three of her individual events.
Isaac, Witherspoon and Payne were also double medallists at the meet. Isaac won the bronze medal in the long jump with a distance of 5.30 metres, qualifying for the OUA championships in the process, while Witherspoon and Payne were also part of the 4x400m relay team that finished in second place with a time of 4:09.01. Joining them in that race were
Miranda Hebert (Newmarket, Ont.) and
Meira Dholakia (Richmond Hill, Ont.).
Bobb was not the only Lion on the podium in the 300m as teammate
Christy Ihunaegbo (East York, Ont.) finished just ahead of her, in second place. Ihunaegbo's time was 39.73 seconds.
Rounding out the medals on the women's side was rookie thrower
Kaitlin Brooks (Barrie, Ont.), who won the bronze in the shot put with a distance of 12.40 metres.
The men's team also finished the meet with seven medals, including three in individual field events.
Nicholas Fyffe (Vancouver) won the gold in the triple jump with a distance of 14.38 metres, while
Mukonka Siakalenge (Baden, Ont.) set a new personal best with a distance of 13.49 metres to win the bronze medal and qualify for the OUA championships.
Samuel Adams (Glasgow, Scotland) set a new season-best height in the pole vault with a mark of 4.80 metres, winning the bronze medal in the process.
The remaining medals came from the relays.
Brock Martin (Grimsby, Ont.),
Suraj Sharma (Brampton, Ont.),
Matt Fouzie (Kingston, Ont.) and
Muad Issa (Mississauga, Ont.) won the gold medal in the 4x800m with a time of 8:02.94, while a second team of
Joshua Ching (Scarborough, Ont.),
Brandon Belan (Espanola, Ont.),
Jordan Miller (Toronto) and
Duan Parchment (Niagara Falls, Ont.) won the bronze in the same event with a time of 8:22.39.
Daniele Orsini (Etobicoke, Ont.),
Mark Hutchinson (Oro Medonte, Ont.),
Jalen Pidlubny (Scarborough, Ont.) and
Zeon Bass (Basseterre, St. Kitts) were the bronze medallists in the 4x200m in a season-best time of 1:31.51, while Orsini, Hutchinson Pidlubny and
Quinn Charles (Toronto) finished third in the 4x400m with a time of 3:35.00.
Next up for the Lions is a trip back to Windsor, Ont., for the Windsor Team Challenge Feb. 10-11. The Lions will be back at the Toronto Track and Field Centre at the end of the month for the OUA championships.
