The York University Lions field hockey team is a perfect 5-0 to start the season after a trio of wins over the Toronto Varsity Blues, McGill Martlets and Guelph Gryphons in Kingston, Ont., this past weekend.
The squad can thank rookie forward
Jaslan Stirling for the success as the Mississauga, Ont., native scored six goals, including two game winners, to lead her team to the three wins.
The Lions opened the action with a huge 3-0 victory over the three-time reigning OUA champion Toronto Varsity Blues, their first win over their city rivals since 1999. Stirling opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a goal that stood as the game winner.
She wasn't the only rookie making waves as
Madison Mitchell and
Frankie St. Louis also tallied in the contest. Mitchell's goal came in the 24
th minute and St. Louis' in the 64
th.
Stirling and the Lions continued to roll the following day, beginning with a 6-1 win over the Martlets. She scored the first three goals of the game, in the fourth, 15
th and 34
th minutes, to put the game out of reach.
Sara Vollmerhausen added her third of the season right before the half, and rookie
Amira Brar netted a pair in the 45
th and 67
th minutes.
McGill's lone goal came courtesy of Olivia Lockbaum in the 54
th minute.
Later that day, the Lions had another big win, knocking off the defending OUA silver-medal winning Guelph Gryphons by a score of 3-1 thanks to a pair of goals by Stirling in the fifth and 67
th minutes. Mitchell tallied the other goal, her third of the season.
The Lions sit atop the OUA standings with 15 points, five clear of the second-place Western Mustangs, and have scored 25 goals, just one short of their total from all of last season. They will look to continue the momentum next weekend when they travel downtown to the University of Toronto for a rematch with the Varsity Blues on Sunday morning at 10:45am. They will also face the Queen's Gaels later that afternoon.
