On November 25, the newly formed York University Men's Basketball Alumni Network hosted over 40 alumni to celebrate legendary York basketball coach Bob Bain's 70th birthday. During his 38 seasons of coaching at York, Bain proved to be a beloved and competitive coach: his teams made the playoffs 35 times; he led York to 11 OUA East Division championships and six OUA championships; and he took his team to the CIS national championship eight times – winning bronze medals in 1978 and 1979. Bain was twice named CIS coach of the year and is a nine-time OUA coach of the year award winner.
The celebration began with a social hour where former players had a chance to reconnect and reminisce on their time as a varsity athlete. With over four generations of alumni at the reception, they all had one common thread linking them together – Bob Bain. As a token of their appreciation, the alumni presented Bain with a commemorative framed York jersey at half-time.
Despite the final score, the visiting Windsor Lancers played spoiler to the festivities with a strong 4th quarter which saw them take the lead and not relinquish it, the alumni enjoyed the evening and are looking forward to staying connected through the Alumni Network.
