The York University Lions women's volleyball team went down in three quick sets to the Western Mustangs on Sunday afternoon in London, Ont.
None of the three sets were that close, with the Lions managing just 16 points in their second set for their highest scoring output of the afternoon.
It was actually the Lions that started quickly, taking a 9-7 lead in the first set. But some strong serving by Western's Chloe Biel helped the Mustangs rattle off 15 straight points, and with a 22-9 lead they took an easy set win at 25-11.
The second set was again close early at 5-4, but the home squad went on a small run to take a 10-4 lead. The Lions went on a run of their own and tied the set at 12-12, but another impressive string of serves by Biel led the Mustangs to a 19-12 advantage they turned into a 25-16 set win.
The Lions won the first two points of the third set but couldn't muster much momentum from that and the Mustangs pulled ahead, ultimately taking the set 25-12 to sweep the match.
Sarah Williams led the Lions in scoring with six points on five kills and one service ace.
Chiara da Silva had 11 assists and
Sabah Kalim led the team with eight digs.
Western's Kelsey Veltman was the match's leading scorer with 19.5 points, including 14 kills, two service aces and seven assisted blocks.
The Lions fell to 7-6 with their fourth straight defeat and are now in fourth place in the OUA East standings. The Mustangs maintained their second-place spot in the West Division with a 10-3 mark.
The Lions have their furthest road trip of the season coming up next weekend when they travel to Thunder Bay, Ont., for a match against the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday beginning at 2pm.
