York University Lions women's wrestlers
Alexandria Town and
Christelle Lans both won medals at the 2018 OUA championships hosted by Brock University in St. Catharines, Ont., on Sunday.
Â
Town won her third career OUA medal with a silver-medal result in the 59kg weight class, and Lans, a rookie, was the bronze medallist in the 72kg division. Town was the first York women's wrestler to win an OUA medal with her first in 2015, and Lans became the second this year.
Â
Town went a perfect 3-0 in her pool to start the tournament, winning all three matches convincingly. She defeated Western's Rachael Gibson 10-0, Algoma's Skyler Perron 12-0 and Guelph's Hannah Little, the eventual bronze medallist, also 12-0.
Â
Matched up against rival Hannah Taylor from the host Badgers, the two battled back and forth throughout their championship bout, with Taylor ultimately coming out on top by a score of 15-10.
Â
Lans was defeated by Ashley Gravelle of the Lakehead Thunderwolves in her lone round-robin match and then faced Western's Jessica Ly in the bronze-medal bout, winning it for her first career medal.
Â
The men's team equalled its best result under head coach
Eamonn Dorgan, finishing in fifth place in the team standings thanks to four wrestlers reaching their bronze-medal bouts.
Â
Kevin Vuong in the 54kg weight class,
Shevonne Witter-Watts in the 57kg division,
Mustafa Shah at 76kg and
Peter Tsarev in the 120kg weight class all finished in fourth place.
Â
The Lions also received both OUA wrestling community service awards, with Vuong receiving the men's honour and
Christine Chan earning the women's award.

Â
Thanks to their top-three finishes, both Town and Lans have qualified for the U SPORTS championships in two weeks at Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. The last time Town competed at the national meet, in 2016, she won York's first ever U SPORTS medal in women's wrestling with a bronze.
