York University Lions wrestler
Alexandria Town continued to put her name into the history books this past weekend with a second-place finish at the U SPORTS championships, the best ever result for a York women's wrestler in program history.
The third-year student-athlete, who returned in impressive fashion this year after missing all of last season with an injury, won her second national medal after claiming bronze in the 55kg weight class in 2016. She is the only York wrestler to win a U SPORTS medal.
This year, competing at 59kg, she had a bye in the first round and then won both of her round-robin matches by tech fall over Krystin Paquette from the Alberta Pandas and Mackenzie Alexson from the Saskatchewan Huskies, including registering the fastest tech fall of the entire competition in just 36 seconds against Alexson.
Matched up against her closest rival, Brock's Hannah Taylor, in the final, the two wrestlers battled hard and Town ultimately came up just short, falling by a 7-4 decision.
She earned U SPORTS second-team all-Canadian honours for her efforts, also becoming the first York women's wrestler to receive the award.
Also competing at the championships was rookie
Christelle Lans, who finished in sixth place in the women's 72kg weight class. She was defeated by Genevieve Lamarche of the Concordia Stingers in the battle for fifth place.
Thanks to the results by Town and Lans, the women's team finished in 10
th place in the team standings.
