LIONS SPLIT WITH GAELS, DROP MATCHES TO MUSTANGS IN FIRST ACTION OF 2018 SEASON

The York University Lions tennis team took on the Queen's Gaels and Western Mustangs over the weekend in their first matches of the 2018 season.
 
On Saturday, the Lions men's team opened the season with a win defeating the Gaels by a score of 8-1. They won five of six singles matches and all three doubles matches as they cruised to the victory.
 
The Lions rookies had a strong day as Tegbir Hara, Jeremy Guttman, Pierre Spender, and Andrew Razaev all won their singles matches. Sophomore Karan Negi also won his match, picking up a straight sets 6-2, 6-4 victory. Hara and Guttman had particularly strong days for the Lions in their debuts and Hara also teamed with Razaev to win their doubles match 8-4.
 
The women's team opened their season with a 6-3 defeat to the Gaels. Heather Hills had a solid day for the Lions, teaming with Claudia Poluga to win their doubles match 8-4 and winning her singles match 6-4 and 6-0. Randa Hassan also picked up a victory for the Lions with a 7-5 and 6-0 win.
 
A quick turnaround saw the Lions travel to London, Ont. on Sunday where they were in tough against the Western Mustangs. The Lions men's team went winless on the day losing 7-0 against the Mustangs squad.
 
The women's team continued their rivalry with the Mustangs with a hard fought 5-2 loss. Picking up victories for the Lions were Hills and Sara Krupica in their doubles match and in singles action Hills won her match and Vanessa Ereqi was awarded the victory in hers by default. Western has defeated the Lions two years in a row in the OUA final
 
The Lions will be back in action on Friday when they welcome the Montreal Carabins to the Tait McKenzie Tennis courts. They will also play at home on Saturday against the McMaster Marauders.
