LIONS TOP WARRIORS BY A SLIM MARGIN

Aisha Lewis (Mississauga, Ont.) scored the only goal as the No. 5 nationally ranked York University Lions women's soccer team won 1-0 against the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday (Oct. 12).

The Lions take their record to 11-1-2. They now lead the OUA West division with 35 points with the Western Mustangs trailing by just one point in second place.

Despite a blistering start, neither team was able to to score in the opening minutes. Nour Ghoneim (Aurora, Ont.) made two shots within ten minutes, both of which were saved by Warriors goalkeeper Lesia Bandura.

In the 25th minute, Bandura was knocked down while sliding to save the ball from a Lewis run. Bandura stayed down for a minute but was able to get up and play on.

Lewis received a through pass from midfield and took a shot from 20 yards that went wide off the goal in the 36th minute.

The Lions increased the pressure in the 37th minute as a pass released Christina Morelli (Markham, Ont.) shot from inside the box. The ball skimmed over the bar.

A minute later, the Lions got their lead from a beautiful team effort. Morelli received a similar through pass from the right and laid the ball off for Lewis to bury home.

Lewis almost added to the lead in the stroke of halftime. However, the Warriors goalie was able to clear the ball before Lewis had a chance to shoot.

The second half saw Lewis taking more chances on goal. Not long after the kickoff, Sarah Wong (Toronto) released Lewis down the left. Lewis shot the ball wide from a difficult angle.

In the 54th minute, Ghoneim went one-on-one with the keeper but Bandura was quick to dive for the save.

Wong continued making her presence known in the 67th minute as she intercepted a ball from a defender's pass and sent the ball to Lewis, whose shot grazed the crossbar.

Wong's streak came to an abrupt end in the 78th minute as the striker clashed with a defender's shoulder head-on. Francesca Pedulla (Richmond Hill, Ont.) came on to replace Wong.

Ten minutes later, Warriors' no. 9, Alisia Mar, clipped heels with Ghoneim while challenging for the ball. Mar was taken to the sidelines for treatment as Alexis Shamess took her place.

Lewis went in for one last attempt on goal in the 90th minute, but Bandura was there to save again.

Lions goalkeeper Courtney Davis (Cambridge, Ont.) successfully kept her seventh shutout of the season.

The Lions will be facing the Windsor Lancers at home on Saturday (Oct. 18) at 1pm.
