The York University Lions football team was defeated by a score of 57-10 by the Queen's Gaels at Richardson Stadium in Kingston, Ont., on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 18).
Â
The Gaels jumped out to an early 17-0 lead after the first quarter of play. The Lions cut into the deficit with a touchdown at 12:28 of the second to make the score 17-7, but a trio of Queen's touchdowns, as well as a field goal and a York-conceded safety gave the Gaels a 43-7 lead at the half.
Â
Queen's added another touchdown and a rouge in the third quarter, as well as a pair of field goals in the fourth, to round out the scoring. The Lions also converted a field goal in the final frame.
Â
York's major score came courtesy of rookie receiver
Joey Ricottone (Burlington, Ont.), the first of his career on an 18-yard pass from starting quarterback
Jahmari Bennett (Mississauga, Ont.). Ricottone finished with four catches for 44 yards.
Â
Bennett had another strong game under centre, completing 14 of 23 passes for 191 yards, with the one touchdown as well as an interception. He also ran for 47 yards on eight carries. In addition to Ricottone, his favourite target on the day was
Jarrett Carson (Brossard, Que.), who finished with four catches for 73 yards.
Â
Nick Naylor (Abbotsford, B.C.) made good on a 28-yard field goal, his seventh of the season.
Â
On defence,
Scott Noivo (Montreal) led all Lions with 5.5 tackles and also had one forced fumble. Also having a big game was
Cole Austen (Barrie, Ont.) with 3.5 tackles and one sack for a loss of nine yards.
Â
Queen's starting quarterback Billy McPhee was 19-of-33 for 386 yards on the day, with four touchdown passes. Three of them were to Alex Carroll, who finished with 209 yards on just seven receptions, including the three scores.
Â
Running back Jesse Andrews added a pair of touchdowns as part of an 18-carry, 141-yard afternoon.
Â
With the loss, the Lions fall to 0-7 on the year while the win improved the Gaels' record to 2-5. Both teams have already been eliminated from the playoffs.
Â
The Lions will wrap up the regular season next weekend when they welcome the Waterloo Warriors to York Stadium on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 25). Kick-off is set for 1pm.
