LIONS DROP FINAL GAME TO UNDEFEATED VARSITY BLUES

The York University Lions women's field hockey team suffered a 3-1 loss to the league-leading Toronto Varsity Blues in the final regular-season contest in Toronto on Sunday (Oct. 19).

The Lions were able to hold off their opponents for almost a half hour. Rookie forward Michelle Per (Port Moody, B.C.) scored her fourth goal of the season to give the team an early lead at the 25th minute.

However, just four minutes after the goal the Varsity Blues equalized through top-scorer Alison Lee. In the 34th minute, the team took the lead with a goal from Emma Stairs.

After the break, the Varsity Blues stamped their victory with a third goal by Amanda Woodcroft. The Varsity Blues celebrated their victory, finishing the season at first place in the OUA standings without a single loss.

The Lions ended with a record of 3-7-2 and finished the season at fifth place with 11 points. The record was enough to book them a ticket to the OUA championships next weekend in Brampton, Ont. They will play a quarter-final game against the Waterloo Warriors in their first match of the tournament.
