LIONS TAKE DOWN WARRIORS IN STRAIGHT SETS

The York University Lions women's volleyball team defeated the Waterloo Warriors in straight sets on Friday (Oct. 24) in Waterloo, Ont.

The Lions won 25-11 in the first set, 25-17 in the second, and 25-14 in the third.

In all three sets the Lions were aided by a series of attack and service errors committed by the Warriors.

Kills by Veneta Mincheva (Gatineau, Que.), Aleks Arsovic (Burlington, Ont.), Michelle Pierce (Windsor, Ont.) and Abby Ganzhorn (Markham, Ont.) gave the Lions and early lead in the first set, dominating the Warriors by 14 points.
The Warriors gained the lead in the second set with a three point advantage over York with kills by Taylor Gray and Kayla Wierts.

The Warriors and Lions remained neck-and-neck in the second set, until the Warriors began committing a series of errors and until the Lions over powered the Warriors with quick kills. By the end of the second set, York held an eight point lead.

In the third set, the Warriors opened up the scoring again with a service ace, but kills by Pierce put the Lions back into the lead. The Lions dominated the third set, only allowing the Warriors to finish with 14 points.

The win moves the Lions to 2-0 on the early season, atop of the OUA standings.

The next game for the Lions is on Saturday (Oct. 25) in Guelph, Ont. against the Gryphons.
