The York University Lions men's hockey team won 2-1 in overtime against the Guelph Gryphons on Friday (Oct. 3) in Guelph, Ont.

The Lions were quick to settle the game as rookie forward
Dylan Smoskowitz (Richmond Hill, Ont.) drove the puck into the net 57 seconds into the extra frame to give the Lions the extra point and their first win of the season. Smoskowitz's goal is his second of the season.

The Gryphons took the lead in the contest with a goal from Jordan Mock with five minutes remaining in the first period. The goal-scoring opportunity was provided by Mark Raycroft and Nicklas Huard. Towards the end of the period, Gryphons forward Teal Burns was penalized with a 10-minute penalty for misconduct.

Early in the second period, the Lions equalized at 6:07 from rookie forward
Mitch VanTeeling (Brandon, Man.) and assisted by
Derek Sheppard of Ajax, Ont. This was VanTeeling's first career goal for the Lions.

There would be no scoring in the third period, setting up Smoskowitz's winner in overtime.

Chris Perugini (King City, Ont.) recorded 28 saves while Gryphons goalie Andrew D'Agostini made 24.

The Lions will head out on the road next weekend for their longest trip of the year, to Thunder Bay, Ont., for a pair of games against the Lakehead Thunderwolves. The two squads will face off on back-to-back nights (Oct. 10-11) at 7:30pm.
