The York University Lions women's basketball team fell to the Waterloo Warriors 53-37 in their home opener on Wednesday evening (Nov. 12) at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
Â
The Warriors took an early lead in the first quarter but a final jump shot from
Courtney Osborne (Markham, Ont.) in the final 50 seconds gave the Lions a 12-10 lead. The quarter was highlighted by three-point baskets from
Emma Thompson (London, Ont.) and
Haley Bowie (Ancaster, Ont.)
Â
The second quarter began slowly with the starting points at 6:23 from Waterloo's Marti Killeen. The Warriors clutched their lead and ended the second quarter with a score of 26-20.
Â
After the half, the Lions began to stray further from the lead giving up many turnovers and missing their jump shots. The Warriors plowed forward with speed, accuracy and coordination, making it difficult for the Lions to defend. The third quarter ended with a score of 40-32 and an eight-point lead for the Warriors.
Â
In the fourth quarter, the point gap became larger, with a consistent 10-point lead for the Warriors. But three consecutive jump shots from Waterloo's Kileen, Amy Jarvis and Jacqui Rodrigues widened the gap to a 16-point lead.
Â
Thompson played a great game scoring nine points – the highest individual total for the Lions. Following closely behind was Osborne with a total of seven points.
Â
The next game for the Lions is on Friday (No.v 14) against the Laurier Golden Hawks at the Tait McKenzie Centre at 6pm.
