The York University Lions men's basketball team was defeated by the Lakehead Thunderwolves by a score of 72-60 in their season opener in Thunder Bay, Ont., on Saturday (Nov. 8).

The Lions trailed in the first half by a score of 30-20. The team's pace picked up on the third quarter, scoring 17 points to take the lead at 47-43. However, the Thunderwolves responded by scoring 29 in the final quarter to win the game.

Points off turnovers were key to the Thunderwolves' victory as Lakehead scored 17 points out of 14 turnovers. Another factor to the win was their free-throw conversions, which gave them 17 points our of 25 attempts.

Richard Iheadindu (Brampton, Ont.) and
Nick Tufegdzich (Tecumseh, Ont.) were York's key players with a combined total of 37 points between them. Tufegdzich recorded a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Tristan Newman (Maple, Ont.) came off the bench to become a vital team player in the game with 10 rebounds and two assists. Newman went 3-of-5 from the three-point line to contribute nine points for the team.

On Wednesday (Nov. 12), the Lions will welcome the Waterloo Warriors for the home opener at Tait McKenzie Centre beginning at 8pm.Â
